March 1st

Welcome to February! We just started sight words in January. Sight words don't require the child to know the entire alphabet with each sound that's made, because they aren't “sounding out” the words. So what I have been doing (and feel free to do this at home) is put up some words and during circle time and recap time, I go through each one. i.e. I hold up the word “in” and I say, “This is the word 'in'. What is it?” And they all respond, “in”. This is the word 'up'. What is it? And they all respond, “up!”. I know it sounds a little crazy, but I promise it works over time. It's a technique I learned in a literacy group just out of college. To add to this method, I also will take them back through the cards and say each letter individually, “I-n, in.” And then have them repeat.

The sight words introduced in January were: I, in, is, it, big, we, up
The sight words I'm going to introduce in February are: and, look, jump, go, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter
We are also working on building CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. They have learned an awesome vowel song and can now 'build' words. Try it with magnets on the fridge or while reading together.

Values of the Month: I really am loving the introduction of the value of the month. The kids responded really well to it in January. And I heard lots of stories from parents who are hearing the kids talking about/using it at home. This month I'm combining two values, Self-Control & Responsibility because I feel they go hand and hand pretty well. I will teach them the ASL sign for each word and we will go over them with books and discussion during each snack time.
SELF-CONTROL: Being in control of yourself, not letting others influence your decision as to what is right or wrong; being disciplined; having power over what you do. RESPONSIBILITY: Doing what we have said we will do; being accountable for our actions and consequences because we know right from wrong; being dependable and reliable; not blaming others.
*Valentine's Day Party!
We will be having a party on the 13th for Valentine's Day. We will be exchanging valentines and placing them in envelopes we've made.
Just a thought:You may bring the valentines however you wish to, but we have been working a lot on recognizing and writing our first names by ourselves. Perhaps see if they can write their first name on all 10 valentines. :) Don't worry about filling out the “To” section. It will make it easier for them if this section is left blank and then they can play mailman and deliver the valentines into all the envelopes without worrying whose goes where. I also need two volunteers for the Valentine's Party. So if you'd be willing to help out with a game or the sugar cookie decorating portion of the party, please sign up on the bulletin board. :) Thank you!

**Papa Murphy's Field Trip: We will be going to the Clinton location near 1800 N. (Just in front of Lowe's) on February 23rd. We will have normal preschool hours. I could use 1 or 2 drivers that day. So if you would like to come, please sign up on the bulletin board. It's fun and free! And other siblings are welcome to join us. Just meet at the preschool and we'll go from there. If you do not plan to join us, please be sure to leave me with a booster seat for your child. Really fun, but not entirely necessary since we're just inside the pizza store, have your child wear their preschool t-shirts. :)

Mid-Year Assessments
I want to see what has been learned since I met with your child back in July/August. I will be doing these during class time and then will send you a report. In May, I will do one more assessment with parent(s) present.
Thanks for helping make this preschool year great!

Have a lovely February!

Welcome to 2015!
GOALS: *A lot of people start the new year off with resolutions and goals. A goal of mine was to add something to the preschool curriculum something I learned about recently. Some of our students have siblings that attend Good Foundations Academy in Riverdale. The school has 'foundation stone' values that they focus on. I really liked this idea, and thought I'd interweave these same foundation stones into the preschool calendar. So month by month I will add new values. The month of January is Respect.
{Respect: Showing consideration for others and their property; listening to and following instructions of parents, teachers; honoring others; following the Golden Rule; being courteous and polite.}
I will be talking to them continually about respect and pointing it out when I see others using respect. I will also ask that they help me during their play time point out when they see friends using respect. I feel that this will be a great addition to our class conversations. :)

Two other big things that we will start this month:
Sight words: The school year is half way through now! Can you believe it? And the kids are doing great! We are going to start sight words in January. Sight words don't require the child to know the entire alphabet with each sound that's made, because they aren't “sounding out” the words. I will help them with learning to sound things out too, but for right now, it's just to sight read. So what I have been doing (and feel free to do this at home) is taken five words and during circle time and recap time, I go through each one. i.e. I hold up the word “in” and I say, “This is the word 'in'. What is it?” And they all respond, “in”. This is the word 'up'. What is it? And they all respond, “up.”. I know it sounds a little crazy, but I promise it works over time. It's a technique I learned in a literacy group just out of college.

The sight words for January are: I, in, is, it, big, we, up

Simple Addition: I will be working with them on patterns and counting/recognizing numbers up to 12 this month. I would love it if you could listen to your child count and see if they are getting those in order. Ask them questions when you are driving together or doing activities together. If you have 2 forks on the table for dinner and there needs to be 6 forks, how many more do you need? I don't expect them to know that off the top of their head, but I'd like them to start seeing the real world application of it. Get those wheels turning even more. :)
Thank you so much!
