2/27 (Daphne's bday) will be on March's calendar!

Welcome to February! We just started sight words in January. Sight words don't require the child to know the entire alphabet with each sound that's made, because they aren't “sounding out” the words. So what I have been doing (and feel free to do this at home) is put up some words and during circle time and recap time, I go through each one. i.e. I hold up the word “in” and I say, “This is the word 'in'. What is it?” And they all respond, “in”. This is the word 'up'. What is it? And they all respond, “up!”. I know it sounds a little crazy, but I promise it works over time. It's a technique I learned in a literacy group just out of college. To add to this method, I also will take them back through the cards and say each letter individually, “I-n, in.” And then have them repeat.

The sight words introduced in January were: I, in, is, it, big, we, up
The sight words I'm going to introduce in February are: and, look, jump, go, said
We are also working on building CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words (i.e. can, map, bat). They have learned an awesome vowel song and can now 'build' words. Try it with magnets on the fridge or while reading together.

Show n Tell Rhyming Time: In the show n' tell bags for the remainder of the school year, there will be a little poem that I want them to finish for their show n' tell day. “I don't mean to brag, but there is something special in my bag. If you listen to my clue, maybe you can guess it too! It rhymes with _______________.” This will add some extra fun and application of learning for the kids.

Values of the Month: I really love the value of the month. Even though they are young, they understand what we discuss at snack time. It's wonderful! And I heard lots of stories from parents who are hearing the kids talking about/using it at home. This month is Self-Control. I will teach them the ASL sign for each word and we will go over them with books and discussion during each snack time.
SELF-CONTROL: Being in control of yourself, not letting others influence your decision as to what is right or wrong; being disciplined; having power over what you do.
*Valentine's Day Party!
We will be having a party on the 13th for Valentine's Day. We will be exchanging valentines and placing them in envelopes we've made.
Just a thought:You may bring the valentines however you wish to, but we have been working a lot on recognizing and writing our first names by ourselves. Perhaps see if they can write their first name on all 11 valentines. :) Don't worry about filling out the “To” section. It will make it easier for them if this section is left blank and then they can play mailman and deliver the valentines into all the envelopes without worrying whose goes where. I also need two volunteers for the Valentine's Party. So if you'd be willing to help out with a game or the sugar cookie decorating portion of the party, please sign up on the bulletin board. :) Thank you!

**Papa Murphy's Field Trip: We will be going to the Clinton location near 1800 N. (Just in front of Lowe's) on February 22nd. We will have normal preschool hours. I could use 1 or 2 drivers that day. So if you would like to come, please sign up on the bulletin board. It's fun and free! And other siblings are welcome to join us. Just meet at the preschool and we'll go from there. If you do not plan to join us, please be sure to leave me with a booster seat for your child. We will return to the preschool afterwards to eat pizza. :)

Mid-Year Assessments
I'm looking forward to seeing what has been learned since I met with your child back in July/August. I will be doing these assessments during class time and then will send you a report. In May, I will do one more assessment with parent(s) present. If you would like to be present for this mid-year assessment, please contact me. We can make an appointment for before or after class.
Thanks for helping make this preschool year great!

Have a lovely February!
