Lovely February

The recent warm weather makes me feel as though spring really will come early.  :)  Who knows what the groundhog will see next week? Here's our calendar for February!  Be sure to scroll to the bottom of the calendar and read the monthly news.  I need to schedule mid-year assessments and we have a Valentine Party and field trip to the library this month!  Thanks again for giving me the opportunity to teach your child!  I really love it. :)

Welcome to February! The school year is half way through now! Can you believe it? And the kids are doing great! We just started sight words in January. Sight words don't require the child to know the entire alphabet with each sound that's made, because they aren't “sounding out” the words. I will help them with learning to sound things out too, but for right now, it's just to sight read. So what I have been doing (and feel free to do this at home) is taken five words and during circle time and recap time, I go through each one. i.e. I hold up the word “in” and I say, “This is the word 'in'. What is it?” And they all respond, “in”. This is the word 'up'. What is it? And they all respond, “up?”. I know it sounds a little crazy, but I promise it works over time. It's a technique I learned in a literacy group just out of college.

The sight words introduced in January were: I, in, is, it, big, we, up
The sight words I'm going to introduce in February are: and, look, jump, go, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter

*Valentine's Day Party!
We will be having a party on the 13th for Valentine's Day. We will be exchanging valentines and placing them in envelopes we've made.
Just a thought:You may bring the valentines however you wish to, but we have been working a lot on recognizing and writing our first names by ourselves. Perhaps see if they can write their first name on all 9 valentines or even their first initial if it becomes overwhelming.
This can be a great learning experience. :) Don't worry about filling out the “To” section. It will make it easier for them if this section is left blank and then they can play mailman and deliver the valentines into all the envelopes without worrying whose goes where.

I would love to have two volunteers for the Valentine Party. So if you'd be willing to help out with a game or the sugar cookie decorating portion of the party, please sign up on the bulletin board. :) Thank you!

**Field Trip to the Library
We are going to tour the library and have a little discovery time presentation on Feb. 18th at 10:30 for the A.M. group and 1:30 for the P.M. at the Southwest Branch where we did the Christmas Program. Any moms and siblings are welcome to join us. I will need at least 2 drivers. So if you'd be willing to drive, please sign up on the bulletin board. It's free and will be fun! We will have normal preschool hours. If cannot join us, please be sure to leave a booster seat/car seat so I can transport your child safely. Thank you!

Mid-Year Assessments
I want to see what has been learned since I met with your child back in July/August. To do this, I would like to schedule mid year assessments. I plan to do these 20 minutes prior to preschool starting on T/W/TH . I will also have some other slots available, like on Mondays and Fridays. Please pick a time and come on over!

Thanks for helping make this preschool year great!

Have a lovely February!

Miss SueZan
